From the Author:

Open Up was written as a follow up to Baby Plays the Banjo and shares the characters Tiny Marie and Belleesha. For the production of Open Up we recast Belleesha in drag and gave her a French accent. I’m now working on a version of the plays to exist as a single event with a short middle section.

Excerpt from Open Up

Dwayne is 6.

The Executive lectures Dwayne.

As Belleesha and The Executive are played by the same actor, the actor should do The Executive facing upstage and Belleesha facing downstage.

THE EXECUTIVE O.S.

Your reputation is going to shit! What you did to that fan was inexcusable. Illegal. And grounds to send you to Juvenille Detention!

DWAYNE

Bitch reminds me of my moms.

THE EXECUTIVE O.S.

Nobody cares that you’re an orphan. We’re all orphans in this business. Buck up and read your contract!

DWAYNE

Reading’s for fools, son.

Belleesha is tripping drunk.

BELLEESHA

He didn’t mean it and he’s going to be a perfect angel from now on, okay? Right, baby?

DWAYNE

I didn’t rip her arm off, I just pulled it out the socket.

BELLEESHA

It’s a simple mistake. Anyone could make.

THE EXECUTIVE O.S.

Our numbers are in the tank! You wanna keep this up, we’re changin the act. Show um you like girls.

DWAYNE

I’m solo!

THE EXECUTIVE O.S.

Not anymore you’re not.

Blackout.

Lights up on Belleesha and Dwayne, checking out Shantee, 7, southern, and her Mother, 30’s, southern. The Other Mother is masked, preferably something plastic and blond and pink, flat.

Shantee and Dwayne hump each other on the floor.

THE DIRECTOR O.S.

Can we make this humping more realistic please?

THE PLAYWRIGHT O.S.

Fuck realism. I hate fucking realism. And they’re playing 6 and 7 year olds.
